Quantum Of So(ng)lace

Quantum Of Solace, the forthcoming 22nd entry in the James Bond series, thus far best known for its shit title, may have one of the better theme tunes of recent years - Variety magazine has revealed that “Another Way To Die” by the intriguing pairing of Jack White and Alicia Keys will accompany the opening credits and usual animated silhouettes of naked birds pole-dancing around the barrels of guns. The track is also produced by Jack White.

Recent rumours were that troubled skeletal pop-mess Amy Winehouse had attempted to record something for the film, but had left it Quantum Of Song-less (ha ha!) when her much reported upon “bad habits” left her unable to make words come out of her mouth. Or sit upright on a chair (allegedly). While Casino Royale was undoubtedly an exciting new direction for the franchise and the best pound-for-pound Bond film in years, it was let down somewhat by the unusual choice of Chris Cornell for it’s own theme song, a decision which would have seemed tacky even back when they had Tina Turner and Sheryl Crow filling the role.

About this entry

I still maintain the Cornell song is perfect for the film. Classic sounding but updated and actually really very good.

I’m very much excited about the new song, anyway! Now all we need is a gaggle of naked Meg Whites in the title sequence and we’ll be sorted.

The Cornell song was a bit of a slap in the face at first. After all the talk of what direction they were taking, more serious, back-to-basics etc., they then had a cheesy as hell rock track. But it suits the film we ended up with so welll. Although I’d say it’s better for where Bond is at the end of Casino Royale as opposed to being over the intro credits. Whatever, it’s fine, and so will this be.

As for Winehouse/Ronson, the song was probably too shit to include but the bullshit excuse will be that Amy was too ‘ill’ to perform it.

Okay, so heres the thing: The Cornell track was brilliant, and Quantum of Solace is an excellent title.

My only concern about this news - and the artist choices and duet concept are just fine - is that David Arnold doesn’t appear to be involved in the writing of the track. Which suggests that (as with GoldenEye and Die Another Day) the theme song won’t be integrated into the film’s score.

Quite. Always prefer it when the score calls upon the theme often. The score in Casino Royale was especially clever because it had shades of Norman’s 007 theme and frequently fooled audiences into thinking we were about to be treated to it.

There’s a great moment where Craig looks at himself in the mirror and the score hints at the 007 theme, only to segue into an instrumental of “You Know My Name”.

What Pete said. Spot on.

Tomorrow Never Dies is a bizarre score, because the song it uses as it’s basis wasn’t selected as the title track…but WAS used over the end credits. Better than nothing, I guess.

Poor David Arnold, they’re pretty down on his songs. Only Myself To Blame (from TWINE) made the soundtrack album, but wasn’t performed anywhere in the film. Its tune appeared in the score, but the song itself was nowhere to be heard.

I think I prefer Arnold’s k.d. lang theme (renamed Surrender) to Sheryl Crowe’s effort. Arnold uses snippets of it throughout the score so it feels more appropriate.

Surrender is kind of a poor-man’s Goldfinger, but it’s more bondian than Tomorrow Never Dies.

I’ll happily re-judge the title of Quantum Of Solace after seeing the film and perhaps understanding it’s relevance, and concede that the Casino Royale song works slightly better in the context of the film than in it’s own right, but it’d be delusional to try and tell myself I came close to actually liking either of them. Luckily they’re about the only qualms I have with the new films so far. The trailer for QoS looked pretty good too.

I hope they include the title in the lyrics somehow. Like, ‘you will find your promiiiiiiiise in the Quantum of Solaaaaaaace’

Or

“By the way if you walked in late
Allow me to reiterate
The name of this movie is Quantum of Solace

They call it Quantum of Solace
You’re watching Quantum of Solace
It’s the theme from Quantum of Solace”

Agree that “Surrender” performed by KD Lang certainly should have been used as the main title theme for Tomorrow Never Dies, but I have to say Another Way To Die is not slaying me so far. But then I did like You Know My Name from Casino Royale. As a musician myself I just thought it had nice chords and bit of drama in it. But at the end of the day I’m just relieved we didn’t have a repeat of “Dire ‘nother Day” by Mad Donna, or indeed the weird Goldeneye combination of wannabe Bond main title theme and odd incidental music by wacky French dude Eric Serra.
