Frost/Nixon. Warning: May Contain Brilliance

It’s leaked out like…oh, just make up your own tasteless metaphor. The Frost/Nixon trailer has popped up on Cinema Blend and, frankly, it’s far more exciting than it has any right to be.

Sure, it may have its original Broadway cast of Frank Langella and Michael Sheen. Sure, it has a screenplay by original playwright Peter Morgan. But, come on, it’s directed by Ron “Da Vinci Code” Howard, a hit and miss talent who already turned facts inside out to nab an Oscar for A Beautiful Mind. We had no good reason to assume anything but a mangled mess.

But…blimey that’s a good trailer, despite the overused music choices. You get a real flavour of the tone, the era, and the present-day echoes. “I’m saying that when the President does it, that means it’s not illegal.” Wicked.

UPDATE: Bah, it’s been taken down. Try here instead.

UPDATE UPDATE: Now in proper quality and without subtitles in that there foreign! Right here.

About this entry

Comments

While it’s a wonderful track, the choice of music is a strange one as it’s not really reflective of the era in which the film’s set - what with having come out in 1971 and all.

Still, this looks great. My parents said the play was fantastic, but I never caught it, so I’m keen to see this. Langella’s impression, in particular, is fantastic. And I’m more kindly disposed towards Ron “Apollo 13” Howard, mainly because of Arrested Development.

Blimey, though, it’s a good time for Michael Sheen playing iconic British figures in the 1970s. Far more so than Frost/Nixon I really can’t wait for The Damned Utd

It’s a good time for Peter Morgan, too. I loved The Last King of Scotland. Though, being wholly uninterested in football I actually CAN wait for The Damned Utd.!

Bloody Hell! so THAT was the film they wanted extras for. We got an email in college asking for people to fill Elland Road, saying they were making a film that included Jim Broadbent, and Michael Sheen.

Aw, I wish I did it now…

I’d be better disposed to Howard if his recent directing work hadn’t been either pretty mediocre or genuinely poor. I adore The Paper, which is little-seen and utterly unappreciated, and Apollo 13 remains a favourite…

…but since then there’s been Ransom (tension-free), EdTV (misses the point), The Grinch (gack), A Beautiful Mind (crass, fictionalised Oscar-grabbing), a couple I haven’t seen, and the diabolical Da Vinci Code (and I liked the book, so it ain’t like I was predisposed to hate it.

Admittedly he’s often got stuck being the B version of better films - EdTV couldn’t take on The Truman Show, Cinderella Man missed the Million Dollar Baby boat, and even Frost/Nixon is coming long after Good Night and Good Luck. But the script implied by this trailer is The Paper-sharp (see it - it’s packed with good lines!) and the feels is of a breezy, yet weighty, film - something he’s not delivered in a long time.
