And your Doctor Who rumour for today is...

… that (according to well-connected comics gossip king Rich Johnston) Paterson Joseph might just be Steven Moffat’s first new Doctor, in the 2011 series.

Of course, he’s basically already played the character once. Take all of this with a pinch of salt, of course, but if it’s true… well, I’ve been saying since 1996 that he’d be perfect for the job, so count me excited.

I’ve been saying Joseph would be great for a while as well. I hope this is true; he’ll be great!

I’ve been a huge fan of Paterson Joseph since he utterly exploded in Neverwhere - and yeah, wow, he could totally play the part. The energy the wit - and he’s sexy as hell. Not always a Doctor prerequisite, but appropriate for New Who and DEFINITELY appropriate for Moffat’s writing.

According to Rich, Neil Gaiman has ALSO been saying since 1996 that Joseph would be perfect…

Latest, though, is that his agent has denied it. Which of course they’d have to do no matter what - chances are, even if there is any substance to the rumour, it’s far from done and dusted just yet, and commenting publicly in any way would presumably risk damaging any negotiations…

Not fair on Tennant, either, if he still has specials and another season to go.

Man, this would be perfect. Especially since I’ve now come round to the fact that having Tennant in for 2010 and then allowing Moffat to end is first series on a regeneration is The Right Way To Go.

I so wish Tennant wasn’t doing the 2010 series. What more will he have to give to the role after the upcoming 4 specials? Moffat’s first episode should be 100% fresh. I’m betting now that Tennant won’t be there, that the regeneration will happen New Years Day 2010 (fuck, I’ll have a massive hangover, like when watching Invasion of the Bane 22 months ago).

Paterson Joseph would be a GREAT choice! I’ve never considered him before, but just thinking about it now he seems like such a natural choice. And he was in Jekyll, that’s got to count for something! I’m sure the tabloids and various twats on various forums would have a field day over the casting of a black actor. Personally I’d be more fussed that someone out of Hyperdrive was gonna be the 11th Doctor!

Aye, Sir.

(My financial consultant told me last week that dvds make lousy retirement provisions.)

Actually, Marleen, you’re definitely someone I can see COMPLETELY loving Neverwhere (although the book’s better than the TV series, even though the TV version came first, but if you watch the series first you get to imagine Paterson Joseph and others when reading it). Do you know any other Gaiman?

Derek Gaiman? (He’s a plumber.)

Oh, shush. The TV version is excellent, but also flawed in some ways, most notably that whole lit-for-film-shot-on-video thing. And the Beast is pretty rubbish. Whereas the book is… well, for me, it’s second only to Sandman in terms of Gaiman’s work (although American Gods also runs it close).

Well, I’ve seen Stardust.

Hehe, confession time. I’ve never read anything by Gaiman. I mean to, not least because my two best friends keep bugging me to, but I didn’t get around to it yet.

But anyway, I’ve ordered Neverwhere (the DVD) now. Along with Big Train and Cruise of the Gods.

That Paterson Joseph dude looks cool on the photo. But you know I hate it when they recycle faces (see also: Martha)…

I don’t disagree on the flaws - but I still prefer it to the book. A lot of that, admittedly, is about the cast; and another part is how it’s so episodically structured. But I don’t think the book can be said to be categorically better.

But then, my favourite version of Hitchhikers is the TV version, too. So maybe we’re just debating our preferred media…

That is actually a bit of a Who tradition, though. If Joseph ever got the role, he wouldn’t even be the first Doctor to have appeared in the show as a different character - that honour goes to Colin Baker, who actually shot the Fifth Doctor <strike>in an argument over eugenics</strike>.

This is getting off-topic, but whilst my favourite version of Hitchhikers by far is the radio series… my second is absolutely the TV series. It gets such a bad rap for no especially good reason. Sure, it’s got its flaws (Zaphod’s head, the model budget running out of money near the end), but it’s still bloody great.

I’m with John on this one. It amazes me how many people dismiss the TV series when it’s absolutely brimming with all the heart and humour of the radio series. And for every ‘Zaphod’s Head’ we have an ‘Hand Animated Guide’ to more than balance out the technical issues.

SEB, for fucking fuck’s sake write your Series 2 article.

I’ve seen various references to this apparent Colin Baker/racism thing before, can someone explain it for those of us who weren’t around when this injoke started?
