Kerry Katona on This Morning

Oh dear. (Opinion after the break.)

Covered everywhere, of course. But what's striking is actually how well Philip Schofield and Fern Britton handle the interview - dealing with the situation head on. I must admit, I have pretty much zero interest in Kerry, and yelling at Iceland ads has become de rigeur in our house - although it's difficult to watch that interview without hoping she gets herself sorted. But beyond the obvious car-crash nature of the clip, it's the sheer professionalism of Philip in particular that I find worthy of a link. It would have been easy to stumble through half the interview and then cut it short - but Philip tackles the situation properly, comes across as someone who genuinely cares... and manages to turn it into - yes - good television.

Truly one of the best presenters on UK television at the moment, and - along with Fern - a pairing that makes This Morning genuinely worth watching.

About this entry

Comments

I’m actually glad he asked the question because from the offset it seemed like she was heavily intoxicated. I actually thought the video in the surgery was a secret film of her being doped up put through breast surgery without consent, with her on the show to talk about the ordeal (my mind wanders easily).

You’re right about Philip though. Daring to ask a question that not many would ask, then show concern and calm Kerry when she feels like she is being accused.

Not sure I agree. “I’m merely pointing out what EVERYBODY watching will be thinking” is a bit much. Then accusing of her being an alcoholic on live TV.

Cutting it short ASAP would’ve been the better thing to do, I think. I think both of them are well aware they’re making headlines as they plough on with it.

But if it was cut short the public would be allowed to think whatever they wanted, then they would harass Kerry for an answer. At least this way her comment is out in the open straight away, whether or not it’s the truth.

The was she says “Does that make me an alcoholic” as if it was a genuine question that got me.

Anyway on BBC news her boyfriend has said it’s because she took her sleeping medication late the night before and she absolutely wasn’t drunk, but I have no idea if that’d cause slurring on that scale.

Anyway, I agree with John. The slurring definitely had to be addressed in the interview and they did seem to take her explanation as true.

Absolutely this.

That’s presumably why she was exactly the same on Celebrity Juice, which afaik isn’t recorded in the morning…

They would have been doing the show a disservice if they hadn’t mentioned how she was coming across. Schofield sounds like he’s genuinely worried about her. He’s right to be as well because she’s a fucking mess and she’s just gonna get worse, especially if she can’t even tell she’s slurring and doesn’t see anything wrong with not being able to do ANYTHING without getting off her face. He did lie though in saying she looks fantastic because, well, she doesn’t. She looks like a woman 30 years older than her trying desperately to make herself look younger with surgery. Her ‘career’, whatever it is, will be over quite soon and it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if she then threw a whole bottle of those sleeping pills down her throat. Harsh, perhaps, but like the new Keane single, she’s spiralling.

Y’know what I’m inclined to give her the benefit of the doubt. Yes her speech was slurred but she seemed to have her wits about her and know what she was talking about - she didn’t really come across as confused and behave in a manner that was way over the top and/or aggressive like people usually would do when drunk. And she seemed genuinely happy in herself which is tough considering everything she’s been through.

I could be wrong yes but maybe it was her medication that caused it. And if it was medication then allegations that she’s an alcoholic and her ‘friends’ Phillip and Fern turning on her are not going to make her feel any better and could drive her to feeling crap about life again, possibly leading to the alcoholism they are accusing her of in the first place. Sure ask her why her speech is a bit slurred but when she gives a seemingly decent answer don’t go accusing her of stuff when you don’t really have a lot to back it up.

It feels weird for me to be ranting about this because I’ve never really given a toss about her before, I just think that was a wholly unneccessary thing to do.

From my experience in working in a psychiatric hospital people who are doped up on antipsychotics tend to barely be able to speak so it’s entirely possible that the reason she gave is true; although why on earth she thought it was a good idea to go on television in that sort of state I’ve no idea - maybe she genuinely didn’t realise how she sounded.

They do handle it well, it would have been ridiculous if they’d just let it pass or cut the interview off; they had to let her have her say and I think they managed that in about the best way possible.
