Doctor Who, Journey's End: CBC Edits

CBC being the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation - the same fellows who provide funding for the series, and get mentioned in the end credits. Which means they’d treat the show with respect, yes?

Apparently not. Especially when they, erm, cut 19 minutes out of Journey’s End. See the link for the full list - plenty of my favourite moments in that little lot, including the German Daleks, and the Doctor’s sharp rebuke to Donna’s mum near the end. But most importantly… the Rose/Doctor kiss on Bad Wolf Bay? I don’t especially like it, but to cut that moment is ludicrous. But what do you expect if you chop out 30% of an episode? You can’t do that and expect anything like the original intentions for the episode to survive.

I wouldn’t bring your attention to it if it was a less important broadcaster, but it seems bizarre that they care enough to fund the series, and then treat it like this. And there’s more complaints about the way CBC are treating the series here. Aw.

Scandalous. SACK THEM ALL.

It’s a bit worrying that CBC are treating the programme so badly - presumably they contribute quite a bit of the funding and it would be harder to make it without their support.

Is there any way to see the edited version in the UK? I’d be interested to see how it compares.

> Yes, no worries there!

Then I don’t see the problem.

:P

(what are they cutting the stuff out for then, telly reruns?)

This is a problem with the first broadcast in Canada. So no, it doesn’t affect us, but seeing as they do provide some of the budget for the series, it’s really odd (do they not want to get their money’s worth?), and it must be incredibly annoying for Canadian fans.

DO we have the reason? I mean, Davies did knowingly take the episode well over time…

I see, Canada.

Well - any chance for Who establishing itself on German telly was destroyed by ProSieben a) not marketing it in a slightest and b) giving it a shitty slot.

But if Canada is already going to show series 4, they’re not in danger of that.

Also, it gives Canadian watchers something special to look forward to: the director’s cut on DVD :)

MARLEEN WHY ARE YOU READING THIS POST?

This isn’t the first time they’ve screwed up at the CBC. During Series 3, they broadcast The Runaway Bride at midnight, edited. And they simply didn’t broadcast Voyage of the Damned.

Ah, now, I meant to mention the Voyage of the Damned thing! Thanks for the reminder.

How ludicrous is it to fund a show and then not even broadcast it?

Yeah, CBC’s treatment of Doctor Who really sucks. As an aside, are they still actually providing any funding for the show? I.E. did they contribute to series 4? I have noticed that the credit for CBC was removed, I think starting with series 3.
