If the costume is anything to go by, then I think they’re going pretty much the only way they could with an actor of Smith’s age in order to make it work. I think they’re going to play up the eccentricity, clearly, and I’m getting hints of Troughton. Excellent.

More than “a hint” of Troughton there- it’s only the unpatterned trousers that really set him apart. In general, it’s a very good look, and gives me the idea that Moffat’s Doctor is going to be an academic, compared to RTD’s mystical healer. The writer has always stressed the Doctor as an investigative mystery-solver, rather than a crusader against evil.

I have to say, though, that I’ve never been a fan of having the TARDIS exterior historically accurate. It’s understandable that the new team would want the leave their mark on it, but at first glance it looks a bit toy-like to me. There’s a nice solidity to it, but it just needs dirtying down a little.

I think the TARDIS will be fine when we se it shot properly with all the grading/HDness present and correct, as opposed to the seaty telephoto lense of some pap.

Such a big and specific old styling of the exterior makes me wonder more about how different this era is going to be. How lovely would it be to have a modern version of the old white interiors, for example?

And then there’s the issue of how ‘reset’ this universe is going to be for the new team? I’ve been thinking about how great it would be if the Time Lords are somehow resurrected giving Doc 9 and 10 some closure and, more interestingly, allowing Moffat to play with the old Doctor/Time Lord dynamic where he’s mainly allowed to do what he likes but every now and then is told to do something. There’s oodles of stuff to do with that, plus it’s a pretty big part of the old series that we’ve not seen addressed in the new version.

Basically, I’m excited.

Obviously, it’ll help with context but but I don’t care for the bow tie. If that is that usual look.

The TARDIS exterior has changed quite a bit it seem: they have repainted the window frames white, modified the light on top, put the badge from Hartnell’s era back on the right-hand door and they’ve given it a new lick of paint and a wood grain effect. People say this police box is taller than Tennant’s, but I am not so sure. Are there any more extensive alterations that I have missed? As far as I can tell the proportions of the windows have not been “corrected” - they’ve just been painted white. I thought Tennant’s TARDIS roof was more flat, but when viewed from above in The Runaway Bride we can see that it’s (seemingly) just as ramped: http://www.eyeofhorus.org.uk/images/photo/10tennan…

Anyway, I love it and the Troughton-esque costume too. I agree with everyone who hopes this indicates a more “mature” Doctor is ahead of us.
