Robin Hood: Gone for good
First Primeval and now this? It’s certainly not been a good few months for fantasy TV chaff.
Actually, that could well be unfair as I only ever caught series 1 of the Robin Hood revival and reports claim things did improve a good amount after that. So, well, let me know.
The Saturday teatime schedule is certainly going to be barer now, as Merlin is the only attempt to capture the popularity of Doctor Who left, but until something has been produced that is genuinely capable of filling in Who’s shoes when it’s off-air, then they can keep getting axed for all I care.
“We are sad to be saying goodbye to this much-loved project but we are extremely excited by our upcoming BBC drama commissions – of which more to follow.”
We’ll see.

That’s a real shame. “Doctor Who” brought a wave of new family drama (which was thought to be a genre whose time had passed by the mid 2000s, lest we forget) and the fact that two of its “big names” have been cancelled is extremely worrying. I love the return to the days when there was something reasonably-light, entertaining and not-too-serious on Saturday evenings that children and adults could both watch and the loss of “Primeval” and “Robin Hood” (the latter of which really seemed to be hitting its stride after a wobbly start) bodes badly for any new projects. Has “Merlin” been re-commissioned?

Yeah, I think it got a new series very shortly after the first ended.

That’s hard. I loved both series. In my opinion BBC investigates too much in dramas.

I’ve caught a few episodes over series 2 and 3 and it defintely improved on that dreadful pilot. It seemed to have quite a passionate little following too.
They introduced a new character in ‘Prince John’ during the final series who was proper ham and looked like he’d stepped straight out of Errol Flynn’s 30s adventure version. I was also impressed when they had the balls to kill off Marion at the end of Series 2.
I didn’t see the last episode, apparently it was pushed onto BBC2 by the Tennis, but I guess killing off Robin is also a pretty unique thing to do.
I’m dissapointed it’s not getting a fourth run, just because I wanted them to copy the awesome Robin of Sherwood and have a new Robin take over from the old one.
