Lab Rats Commentaries!

Oh yes. The DVD may not have any extras, but that hasn’t stopped Chris Addison, along with co-writer Carl Cooper and producer Simon Nicholls, recording their own commentaries - which you can download from here. (iTunes integration coming shortly, apparently.)

I’ve only listened to the first two so far, but what I’ve heard is excellent - both informative and lots of fun. (And a few awkward bits where I wish they’d carried on talking about something naughty rather than having to change the subject.) It’s great to hear people who are honest about the faults with the show (and they also comment on the pacing problems I mentioned in my review of ‘A Protest’) - but who are clearly proud of what they made, too. As they should be. And there’s even some great discussion about how they crafted the jokes - a topic missing on a lot of comedy DVDs, as it’s notoriously hard to nail down.

I wish everyone did this. They clearly wanted extras on the DVD, but weren’t allowed to put any on due to cost (and apologise for this in the commentaries). So what do they do instead? Go and record a load of commentaries themselves - and give us a fascinating insight into the show that we never would have had otherwise.

Which is brilliant, obviously. Like I say, if only everyone did it…

Comments

I remember that Darren Aronofsky put a commentary for The Fountain online when the DVD was released without one.

Does anywhere have a full list of official commentaries that were released online instead of on DVD? Wikipedia doesn’t list many examples.
