One for the "Great idea, Steinberg" file

So, mere months away from a point at which the entire, self-contained RTD era of Doctor Who (and the wholesale rebranding exercise of the Moffat production suggests that we are free to consider it as such) could be collected in a boxset, and what is this we find about to be released?

A series 1-4 boxset. Containing everything but the specials.

WELL DONE.

How rubbish. And the lavish packaging suggests that this is definitive, too. It’ll either be replaced for next Christmas with one including the specials, or the specials will be released in a set with Moffat’s first three years. Either way it is arse.

No New Who set will be definitive until it contains the full-length versions of Confidential, anyway.

Mind you, if the rest of the specials are as dire as Planet Of The Dead then they deserve to be left out of the definitive box set.

But by that rationale, so does Fear Her.

Planet of the Dead suffered from a dearth of fresh ideas; if anything I suspect the remaining specials will be the opposite, and we’ll have to see whether they suffer for being crammed so full. They’ll be a finale appropriate to RTD’s realm, which probably means they’ll contain the best and worst excesses of his tenure. Whatever happens I’m sure he’ll be proud of them himself. I doubt that he himself believes Planet of the Dead was his finest hour.
