In complete contrast to the Grammy Awards, I believe the Golden Globes still (mostly) honor those that truly deserve to be honored. Take a look at some selected nominees that were announced a few days ago and see what I think about them.

Best Motion Picture - Drama

Babel - Now here's a film that just screams "I want awards!, dammit" Too bad the film actually blows and doesn't deserve anything but a Razzie award, if that. Consider this a pity nomination. On the actual night of the awards, the reading of this nomination will be accompanied by five minutes of laughter in the audience. (Okay, that was a little harsh. But the film isn't nearly as good as it's cracked up to be.)

Bobby - Haven't heard much about this film, but it's a biopic, and those are always Oscar/Golden Globe candy.

The Departed - Martin Scorcese actually made a film that's enjoyable to watch, AND is excellent.

Little Children - Haven't seen it, but the trailer makes it look interesting. Looks shot well and highly character driven.

The Queen - Another bio-pic. See above.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama

Leonardo DiCaprio – Blood Diamond - The trailer looks ho-hum. Leo's accent sounds fake as all get out. I doubt he deserves this nomination.

Leonardo DiCaprio – The Departed - This I can believe. Great performance, great film.

Peter O'Toole – Venus - Didn't see it. Looks like artsy fluff.

Will Smith – The Pursuit Of Happyness - Feel good movie of the year? Maybe. Obligatory nomination for a black actor? Of course. Another racist statement by Andrew? Not at all. It just seems that there's always a nomination for a black actor even if they didn't particularly give a performance worthy of one. For instance, after Spike Lee complained about the Oscars shunning of black folk, Denzel Washington won an award the next year for a performance that wasn't nearly as good as any of his others.

Forest Whitaker – The Last King Of Scotland - I predict Forest will take the gold, here. This man is a spectacular actor. He deserves this award most out of all the nominees in the category.

Best Motion Picture - Musical Or Comedy

Borat: Cultural Learnings Of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation Of Kazakhstan
One America; Twentieth Century Fox - Borat mahake-a the shexy-time? Yais!

The Devil Wears Prada - Ehhhhhhh. Chick flicks don't deserve Golden Globes.

Dreamgirls - Possibly... Haven't seen it yet.

Little Miss Sunshine - Absolutely adored this film, but best comedy? As far as funny goes, Borat was much funnier. Good to see it nominated, though.

Thank You For Smoking - Haven't seen it yet, heard it's great though. Could even beat Borat.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy

Annette Bening – Running With Scissors - I doubt she's in the film enough to warrant an award, but who knows, haven't seen it yet!

Toni Collette – Little Miss Sunshine - A likely candidate, for sure. I think she has a chance.

Beyoncé Knowles – Dreamgirls - Ick, a singer turned actress turned singer again... Stick to the Grammys, Ms. Knowles. At least there you'll be appreciated... *chuckle*

Meryl Streep – The Devil Wears Prada - Never saw it. Don't want to see it. Could be Globe-worthy. Doubt it, though.

Renée Zellweger – Miss Potter - *snort* *chuckle* Beatrix Potter did not have permanent lemon face.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical Or Comedy

Sacha Cohen – Borat: Cultural Learnings Of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation Of Kazakhstan - If he doesn't win for best comedy, surely he'll win this.

Johnny Depp – Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - Dead Man's Chest was not a comedy film or a musical, so regardless of his great performance why is he in here?

Aaron Eckhart – Thank You For Smoking - Oh yes, very possible. I love him as an actor, didn't see him in the film yet. I'm sure he's great.

Chiwetel Ejiofor – Kinky Boots - From what I saw in the trailer, I doubt he has a chance.

Will Ferrell – Stranger Than Fiction - This is another film that screams "I'm brilliant and deserve awards!" In reality I doubt it's much more than Will Ferrell running around doing silly things for two hours. Probably not funnier than Borat, either.

Best Performance by an Actor In A Supporting Role in a Motion Picture

Ben Affleck – Hollywoodland - Again, didn't see it. Maybe he was good?

Eddie Murphy – Dreamgirls - Yes, yes, yes! This is the buzz Eddie Murphy needs to boost his career. The dude is talented, though he has had poor choices in the films he makes as of late. Maybe this is his big third chance.

Jack Nicholson – The Departed - Could be... Wasn't an outstanding performance, it was just normal ol' brilliant Jack.

Brad Pitt – Babel - No, no, no. Brad Pitt good, Babel bad. If Pitt deserves a Globe, it's for Fight Club... And they'd be about eight years too late on that one.

Mark Wahlberg – The Departed - We get it, talented actors are abound in "The Departed!"

Okay, I'm tired... You all get the picture. The nominations are for a bunch of movies I haven't seen yet. Anyway, there's lots of talent up there on the board. So that means I may actually bother to watch the Globes this year. Most likely I'll just Tivo it and tell people I'll watch it later. But we all know I won't.
