First Impressions of Hot Fuzz

Solace in Cinema writes about the first full screening of Hot Fuzz, which will be premiering in the UK on Feb 16th, and in the US on April 13th.
It's difficult to describe how good 'Hot Fuzz' is, without gushing like a total fanboy but It really is great. I don't want to over-hype it, but as a point of reference; Shaun of the Dead was Edgar and Simon's lovesong to 'Dawn of the Dead', 'The Evil Dead', 'Day of the Dead', and 'Night of the Living Dead', 'Hot Fuzz' is their new album of songs dedicated to 'Bad Boys', 'Bad Boys 2', 'Point Break', 'Commando', and 'The Wicker Man'. That was one of the things that was so great about 'Shaun' and is equally true of 'Hot Fuzz', the films are littered with movie references both obvious and subtle, If you get them you're loving it, but if you don't there's enough jokes to make you love it anyway.
I'm really excited for this movie. I just recently watched all of the Spaced episodes, and I am an avid fan of Shaun of the Dead. And it looks to be that Hot Fuzz won't be any loss of quality.
April can't come soon enough.

Actually, film journalist friend of mine saw it recently and she wasn't keen...
But I'm not sure how qualified she is to comment on such matters, since as far as I know she's certainly not the most ardent Pegg/Wright fan... ;-p

Let's guess the Wicker Man reference already. It'll be either someone seeing something and saying 'oh God, oh Jesus Christ!!' or some nutjob has built a wicker man in their garden or they'll do the whole 'I'm looking for a missing girl' thing.

>We hate to niggle, but the stream of Britcom cameos – Steve Coogan, Martin Freeman, Bill Nighy, Stephen Merchant, Bill Bailey, David Threlfall, Adam Buxton – while very impressive, becomes something of a distraction after a while.
I absolutely hate cameos like this, they almost always take you out of the movie. Not that these actors shouldn't be in roles, but it should be more than cameos. Bill Nighy aside (he seems to be in everything these days) I'd like to see all of them in more films roles (well, some of them haven't been in any films), particularly Adam Buxton who's actually pretty good but he'll probably always be overlooked.
