You Couldn't Have It That Much Better...
It's all too easy to be wary when four- and five-star reviews are given out to albums by bands that are as big a critical and popular darling as Franz Ferdinand are. Particularly when the much-lauded debut album, while having a couple of cracking tracks on it, was by and large a good rather than great record.
However, this is one where it is possible to pay attention to the rave reviews. You Could Have It So Much Better is this - brilliant. It's probably not an all-time classic, and it's not really an album to move you or make you think. But in terms of writing damned tuneful - and, as usual, danceable - indie-pop, they've hit the nail on the head with this one. Storming.

I heard the first Franz album (a few times. don't judge on first listen) and thought 'why is everyone making such a big deal about it?' because it's mostly mediocre. It's just further proof that marketing and a catchy track or two can work wonders. But I like 'Do You Want To' (even though it's a glaringly obvious attempt to write a second 'Take Me Out', and the 'you're so lucky...' part is just...demented) and I'm looking forward to giving the album a listen.
As for magazine reviews, I've decided I'm never gonna listen to one ever again after they all gave Coldplay's X&Y 5/5 and saying it's a 'masterpiece' and all this crap. How can it be a masterpiece when it's worse than their first two albums?
