Compilation CDs

I'm currently putting one together. My first one, actually. It's going to contain loads of jingles, computer game music, and TV themes, so is probably UNLISTENABLE TO to anyone else, but fun for me.

What's the last compliation you put together?

Oh, I have an odds-and-sods mp3 cd that technically, isn't complete yet--I put whetever catches my fancy on it, but haven't added anything lately. Lots of music from the anime FullMetal Alchemist, some from Pretty Soldier Sailormoon, a couple of Red Dwarf-related tracks (two--count 'em!--two versions of "Tongue Tied"), some individual tracks from Cowboy Bebop and Fushigi Yuugi (I'd put more Cowboy Bebop on it, only I have the OST on a separate disc, so I only added the opening and ending themes to this one). I may add some Trigun or something soon, tho'.

Hi, my name is Meg and I like anime and manga.

You only changed the title; it's still there in the text.

My inner Spelling Jerk is getting a lot of exercise.

My Alan Partridge soundtrack.

Actually, thanks to iTunes, I rarely end up burning my compilations anymore...I make a lot of them, I just keep them organized by playlist.

I've never put together a compilation CD, nor felt the urge to put one together.

SO THERE.

When I had to press 'play' and 'record' at the same time. 'Mix CD' just doesn't have the same ring to it for me.

I used to make loads of compilation tapes when I was a student, so I know what you mean, Joey.

>I used to make loads of compilation tapes when I was a student,

Yes, but did you make little charts beforehand with running times so that you'd be best equipped to decide which tracks would best fit where on which side to maximum balance and listenability?

...I didn't. Really. I swear I didn't.

My tapes would have been a lot better if I did.

...yes. Yes, I did. I also made covers for the tapes, utilizing my magnificent artistic abilities.

I used to do loads of tapes as a child. Mostly Animaniacs and other cartoon songs, "Do The Bartman", stuff played by me on the keyboard, videogame music, me reading those few poems from Calvin and Hobbes Sunday strips. Naturally, I added the obligatory DJ introductions to each item too. I remember being pleased when I first used the phrase "next up..." to add some variation! :-)

I still use tapes as a way of keeping CDs rented from the library. Partly because I don't have my PC & CD burner at uni, but also because the reduction in sound quality means there's still an incentive for me to buy the full CD, so you see, it doesn't feel like piracy!

No, but I'm always disproportionately impressed when stuff just happens to fill a side exactly.

God, I used to love making tapes. Although it took me far too many years to realise that if you're taping over an existing tape, pressing "Pause" rather than "Stop" after recording each track will eliminate the little bursts of sound that you'd otherwise get between tracks...

Nowadays, I don't really make them for myself - most of my listening is done in MP3 form, so I make a fair few "current playlists", and compile the odd mix CD for my mates, but never really burn many for myself unless I'm doing compilations of bands whose albums I don't own all of on CD (eg the Half Man Half Biscuit and Of Montreal best ofs I did a little while back), or doing soundtracks like the Life on Mars one I did last year...

Not the last one but I do remember making a 2 tape compilation called 'Smegrock' to accompany the journey from Northants down to Shepperton for the recording of 'Only the Good' from Red Dwarf Series VIII.

It was a generic rock classics mix with a bit of 80s thrown in intermixed with memorable dwarfy quips and various soundbites, mostly from a Spitting Image tape. It ended with the dreadful extended cheese dwarf end theme. Just so I could ridicule it to a small audience. Son of Smegrock naturally followed.
