Love Soup

Appalling title, but this new series that's starting on BBC1 tonight at 9pm has got to be worth keeping an eye on for the brilliant Tamsin Greig, if nothing else. And it's easy to dismiss David Renwick these days after how tired and hackneyed Jonathan Creek became in its later years, but you can never write off the man behind One Foot In The Grave and you'd hope he's still capable of moments of genius...

ETA : I could have just put this in comments, but I thought it was worth editing the entry for. I spent the whole hour trying to figure out who the American bloke was, so I IMDbed him - HE WAS THE ORIGINAL JIMMY OLSEN IN THE CRAPPY ’90s SUPERMAN TV SERIES!

About this entry

Comments

It has a woman from 2POLAAPOC. This worries me, yet I know it shouldn't.

I'll GIVE IT A GO.

Yeah, but the thing about 2POL is that, with the exception of the "student" character, it's got a quite good cast - Natalie Casey is excellent, and Ralf Little and and Sheridan Smith are both quite good. It's just got some of the most utterly dismal scripts that have ever been committed to TV. So Smith might actually be alright in something, you know, *good*.

Smith was in Holby City a long while back, playing a completly different character to the one in 2POL. She did really well at it. I think you could be pleasently surprised.

Excellent, I shall give her a fair shot, then.

Also: I want to do a sex with Tamsin Greig.

Yeah, Sheridan Smith is good. She was in that Eyes Down (I know I'd have my eyes down if I was looking at her...). I don't rate Two Pints of Lager most of the time, but it can be OK, I think it got better in the last couple of series. She is definitely the best thing about it (apart from laughing at Ralf Little's inability to act). I read they're doing a sort of sequel sitcom to it.

One Foot In The Grave is still quality compared with anything else that's been on BBC1 since. I like the fact that it sometimes has this darker or more surreal edge to it, which is best shown when Victor was killed at the end. I'm gonna watch this new thing but I'm not holding my breath.

Well, I managed to watch 15 minutes of this before I had to have tea, and my DTV card messed up the time Time Shift... Bah.

However, what I did see of it I liked quite a lot. Nice, gentle comedy with good performances.

Anyone got thoughts on the entire show?

Yeah, it was alright. A few pretty funny moments, and a great cast. A few bits dragged on a bit, but generally it looks worth sticking with.

You have to wonder where he's going with this - if they're destined to meet at the end of the series, or if he's going to pull a fast one and have them never meet at all. But the characters are quite likable, helped by the fact that the lead actors as quite likable.

Although why is it IMPOSSIBLE to escape Bob Dylan on the BBC at the moment? How have they managed to coincide all this gumpf they're doing about him with the premiere of a drama series that in its first episode has a play with someone playing him?

I liked it. It didn't make me laugh all that much, but I did enjoy the way he introduced us to the characters. And they all seam quite endering.

I hope that he has gone the girly route and they will meet. But then me being a girl, I would say that.

There were two Jimmys in Superman. I found that terribly confusing as a child.

Yep. The bloke from Love Soup was replaced after the first series by a floppy-haired muppet.

The thing I could never understand about the Superman TV series was that they got the Clark Kent disguise the wrong way round. In the comics, the whole thing about disguising himself was that he'd slick back his hair and put glasses on. In that TV series, though, he had his hair all free and dry as Clark Kent, but when he changed into Superman it was all slicked-back.

Now you can imagine him slicking back his hair when he changes back to Clark Kent - when the emergency's over, and he goes into some cupboard in the Daily Planet to put his suit back on, he could put a bit of gel on. But when he hurriedly changes from Clark to Superman in the TV series in order to apprehend some bank robbers or something - WHERE DOES HE GET HIS HAIR GEL FROM?

Erm, I've thought about this too much, haven't I?

You're forgetting something: Superman is magics, he can do anything. He doesn't need no puny Earth hairgel to slick his hair back, he probably has magic glands in his head that excretes a gel like subtance at will.

Either that or his uses his own Love Soup.

Laugh or the kitten dies.

Actually, Superman isn't magic. In fact, magic is one of only two things (the other being that green rock stuff) that he's vulnerable to.

Some good funny, some excellent dark, strong performances, decently edited...I'm sold.

The problem is that after so many OFITGs and Creeks, you really start to see the shape of Renwick's writing. Stuff that might be throwaway for anotehr writer you KNOW are going to come back later for a pay-off, and it always does. Still, he remains great at everyday eccentricities (often seen as oxymoronical by script editors at the Beeb).

And two truly GREAT lines about writing in there:

(On being told by his nurse that she watched the wildlife programme last night): "Yeah. It was ruined by the canned laughter, though." / "Sorry?" / "Nothing - just being fashionable."

And this gem, which picks up on my biggest bugbear about the Radio Times letters page: "Have you noticed that the criticism 'lazy writing' has now become an EXAMPLE of lazy writing...?"

Lovely stuff.

"magic is one of only two things (the other being that green rock stuff) that he's vulnerable to"

I can just imagine him being distracted by a street magician en route to saving a bus full of european tourists.

Going back to the original topic, Love Soup is turning out to be very excellent indeed.

It helps a lot that I can identify (and actually really like) the two leading characters. Plus Jaime Murray was in episode 2...

Every week. Every damn week that man is having me beaming with delight. This is such a wonderful programme.

I know the 'twists' were slightly obvious, but it didn't stop them being lovely.

David Renwick in an ace.

As to the preceeding item the sig tune and some of the backing music is a really laid back must! Any body going to enlighten us as to the who of 30's combo? Please?
Well the content is just as funny as it was first time around. For me to actully sit and watch the TV for more than five minutes Is wonderful, as there is just so much dross on these days ,or is it just me?

Love Soup.
Good Saturday night entertainment but who is the singer of the signature tune? The sub-titles are so fast I can't catch her name and I would love to hear more.

I don't think the theme is named in the credits - it's called Alley Boogie. Renwick mentions it on the first series DVD. He apparently liked the track already, then realised it matched his lead character's name (Alice).

Looking on iTunes, it sounds like the artist is 30s blues singer Georgia White.

I assume the rest of the show's music is also taken from existing tracks - from various artists, I suppose - as there's no credited composer.

I'm enjoying this series, though I'm unsure about the introduction of another comedy writer character. The first series went occasionally OTT with its digs at moderns TV, and this has kicked them off all over again - to the point where it's taking away from the main characters. Mark Heap's fab, though, obviously.
