What the FUCK?
I'm just watching Vic Reeves' Best and Worst of God on BBC TWO. Not only has the programme been put through a pointless filmising effect (really, what does it add to a programme like this?), but... all the clips from various comedy shows have been too!
I mean, why? It's a CLIP FROM ANOTHER PROGRAMME. Have some respect for it and use it as originally broadcast, for fucks sake. It completely changes the feeling of the shows - and looks diabolical as well.
It's sheer laziness. They've just stuck the whole programme through the filter after it's edited, rather than do it properly. Fucking hell, it's amazing that people that lazy are actually allowed to make programmes.

Jesus Christ, that's unbelievable.
Do you think this FRV fad will eventually wear off, or what? I mean, fair enough if producers make the decision to use it on their own programmes, but vandalising archive clips like this is just STUPID.

When HDTV really takes off, we won't have to put up with it any more - because they'll shoot new stuff either interlaced video as normal (just higher resolution), or *true* progressive video - which looks more like film.
Till then, it looks like we're stuck with fool people making idiotic decisions.

The BBC does shoot quite a few shows in HD now. Can't remember which off-hand, though...

It just suprised me that they'd have done this one (which is Different Worlds: The Planets, incidentally) in HD, when it was produced in 1999. Obviously that's when they started with HD.
Unless someone knows better?

All I know is that they better shoot the 3rd(new) series of Who in HD. They've thought about doing it for two seasons now and not bothered. Of course, the first two seasons can be upscaled somewhat for a HD-DVD/Blu-ray/whatthefuckever release sometime in the future, but it won't be the same. It'll look a lot classier when shot on HD, even when viewed in standard def. Maybe Sci-fi will buy the series when that change happens.

Isn't it true that HD doesn't support any form of 4:3, so any 4:3 archive programme shown on it will have to be cropped?

Sure surely 4:3 clips wouldn't NEED to be cropped if the producers/editors just put two verticle black bars either side? This is how I view all my 4:3 programmes on my widescreen telly. It really isn't all that awful.

Call me thick, but surely strecthing and cropping a clip is much more work than just slapping it into the 16:9 frame, un-touched?
In my experience, though, people are scared of black bars. They'd rather have stretch-o-vision or cropped images. This country...

Am I right in thinking the UK has yet to screen anything in HDTV as yet? I've heard this is because no-one actually owns a HDTV in the UK (possibly).
A fairly nice proportion of US shows are shown in HDTV and I think this is noticeable when you...er...view them on a PC (flatscreen). But I could be being naive.
