New Who Spin-off?

From the latest issue of Ariel, the BBC In-house mag (as mentioned on the Restoration Team forum):

"CBBC is developing a spin-off series from Doctor Who based on the adventures of investigative journalist Sarah Jane, played by Elisabeth Sladen, and to be written by Russell T Davies. Sladen, who originally played the Doctor's assistant in 1973, returned for the last series where she was seen vying with young Rose Tyler for the Doctor's affections."

Apparently, the source for this isn't known yet - it's not a press release from BBC Wales - so the official Who site is holding off for now.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's true, though - Russell has been hinting for ages than there were plans for further spin-offs in his Doctor Who Magazine column...

It doesn't say K9, which is interesting. Maybe they don't have to rights to the metal bastard, what with him appearing in an animated series of his own. Anyway, Russell should have no problem with this seeing as most of new Who would fit nicely on CBBC.

There's bound to be kids in it. Probably Sarah Jane's nephew or niece or something (as they rather poigniantly mentioned in School Reunion, she has no children of her own).

A few interesting titbits in the new DWM...A Sarah Jane series isn't confirmed yet, but they're shooting a 60 minute pilot which is being written by RTD and Gareth Roberts. No word on whether this is actually going to be made by CBBC, but given that they seem to have abandoned serialised drama, I suspect it probably won't.
