Biffo-sitcoms-me-do!
This is quite exciting. Paul Rose, who you might know as Mr Biffo off of sadly-defunct Teletext games page Digitiser, has got a couple of sitcoms in development. In today's blog post, he's finally revealed a few more details. With comments from Zombie Dave.
Too Much Too Young is designed for the 8:30pm on BBC ONE slot. Tricky, but how excellent would it be to have something written by Paul Rose in that slot? Even better, how about something starring Dylan Moran! Dylan Moran in a prime-time BBC ONE sitcom? Excellent! It also stars Maxine Peake, off of dinnerladies and Shameless, and is directed by Black Books's Nick Woods.
* Thzzzzzz snzzzzzzzz frrrrrn exxxxxrrrn.
A little less is known about Now The Weather, except that it's for Channel 4, won't have as many trad elements as TMTY, and will star Mark Heap! It's quite remarkable, but as Biffo points out, this will be his first starring role, provided everything goes to plan. It'll be directed by Michael Cumming, off of the Brasseye programme. Both pilots will be going into production within the next month.
* Frrrg rrrrrrrrrf, yrrrrrr crrrrrndz.
(Sorry.)

8:30pm BBC ONE slot? It could be the new Brittas! (As in: a decent family sitcom in that timeslot, rather than anything else.)

Or not. When was the last time 'Oh, let's put (insert comedian) into a BBC1 primetime sitcom!' actually worked? Some names - Ardal O'Hanlon...I don't really need to go on from there do I? There ARE others, such as Paul O'Grady, Jasper Carrott (for All About Me rather than The Detectives), Lee Evans.....I can't really think of anymore so maybe I'm wrong. A comedian in a sitcom certainly CAN work. It's just, there probably hasn't been a decent BBC1 sitcom on pre-watershed since Brittas, and we all know how great Chris was in that.
'Chef!' with Lenny Henry was post-watershed, wasn't it? I seem to remember enjoying that, although it's the only thing featuring him I have enjoyed. He's doing a new sitcom, which is a very good idea. He's wasted doing crappy sketches. I hope everyone caught the joke in Extras. The way it was played was sheer excellence.

By the way, I've just checked a list of sitcoms, and guess which show has the most episodes - Red Dwarf or Love Thy Neighbour? Yes, indeed it's Love Thy Neighbour with 55 episodes. Jesus H on a crutch petting a rabbit in a hutch I never knew it lasted that long. Speaking of LTN, people always go on about how racist it is and everything, but it isn't, it's the white character that is, and, just like on Rising Damp, the show is taking the piss out of the racist person. The Rudolph Walker character always comes out best.

For some reason, I never found Digitiser particularly funny when it was on, and yet Mr Biffo's column is consistently one of my favourite parts of Edge.

I went to this, and sat in the audience.
I was amazed that Dylan Moran was now doing this kind of saft sitcom. It really struggles to be funny and has, as you rightly point out, all the hallmarks of other sitcoms in its genre.
The only thing that made me laugh during the evening was Moran as he ad-libbed lines and threw his fellow actors off course. But I have to say this one is a lame duck!
