Look! Mitchell and Webb!

Don't forget, folks, That Mitchell and Webb Look starts at 9:30pm, tonight, on BBC TWO. I went to the recording of the pilot, and it's absolutely incredibly amazingly fantastic. Mitchell and Webb are the best double act since Lee & Herring. Watch it, or it'll be a bad miss.

Ahhh, goodness!

It should cheer me up after being forced to endure Extras beforehand.

That was brilliant!

Unsurprisingly; Numberwang and The Surprising Adventures of Sir Digby Chicken Ceaser were my favourites.

I'll say here what I've said everywhere else: best sketch show in fucking *years*.

The revolving platform in Numberwang had me in hysterics.

It was the bag with 'NO' written on it being put on Olivia Coleman's head that got me.

The revolving platform in Numberwang had me in hysterics.

I was CRYING at this point.

Not a duff sketch among it. Numberwang the undisputed highlight, followed closely by Sir Digby. I also loved Angel Summoner and the BMX Bandit, especially because they managed to get three sketches out of it and NOT just use the same joke each time...

Of course, Numberwang is basically the Adam and Joe sketch Quizzlestick, but on a bigger budget:

Not that it matters, of course...

The Moneypenny sketch was superb. Mostly because I'm so thick it took me flipping ages to catch on to who James was, but it didn't matter because it was already funny anyway. Oh, the joy of having something genuinely silly and laugh-out-loud funny on the BBC again! (I have to disagree with Ian 'Ian' though, as I still think Ant & Dec are the funniest double act since Lee & Herring).

I do like Ant and Dec... but I think there's a big difference between "funny presenters" and comedians.

That's not to belittle presenting - it's *extremely* hard to do well, and there's very few people who can do it - and Ant and Dec are two of them. It's just they're two different disciplines, and I don't really think of presenters as a "double act".

That's it, they're always saying Ant and Dec are like Morecambe and Wise but they're NOT, they're presenters, and good ones at that.

I did like this quite a bit actually. It felt fresh and, unlike most new sketch shows (well, unlike most new comedy shows of any format), it had what I call the 'anti-wank factor' i.e. I wasn't watching it thinking 'why am I still watching this when I could be having a wank?'. It wasn't trying to be too clever or shocking or shoving grotesqueness in your face (I'm thinking of Tittybangbang and Little Britain series 2 & 3 here...except, forget the 'clever' part)

The insurance sketch was excellent. Normally I wouldn't laugh at something so simply stupid as a 'June Whitfield' caption appearing in front of a man but for some reason it sent me over the edge. Angel Summoner and the BMX Bandit is...well what words can describe it? All that matters is it's funny. Some of the sketches were hit and miss, but that's a whole lot better than the entire episode being shit and miss, meaning 'it's shit and I'm definitely gonna miss the next one'.

Round of applause for Mitchell & Webb! Oh, and I really liked Extras as well, so fuck anyone who hates Gervais.

Numberwang was the funniest thing I've seen in ages. The Angel Summoner and the BMX Bandit was similarly great (but got old quickly). Some of it was a bit patchy (I really didn't get the point of the Bond sketch) but it was a pretty good episode one.

I beg to differ on Ant & Dec (but then I would, wouldn't I?) They're not just 'presenters'. They've combined sketches with presenting in their own shows since the halcyon days of 'SM:TV Live'. I think it's a tad unfortunate that they've become better known as presenters thanks mostly to that crappy jungle show, but look back on their earlier stuff and you'll see they're actually two pretty talented comedy actors as well. I think they're as much a double as act as M&W or Vic & Bob, they are just better known now for presenting. And yes, as John and money say, they are extremely good at presenting, which is one of those jobs that the very good ones make look easy!

David's performance was really off in that one, for some reason. I'm sure he's not usually QUITE as camp as this.

Not as good this week, I think - although still absolutely marvellous. I especially liked the daytime TV stuff. Felt very Lee and Herring that bit, for some reason, which is excellent - not the personalities, just the style of humour.

Numberwang should probably have been a one-off.

I agree about Numberwang. They did a decent job of keeping it varied, but it's just not needed every week. I have a feeling we'll get it anyway, though.

But that hardly matters, when almost all of the show was totally original stuff. The Holmes and Watson stuff had me on the floor and this exchange...

M: Lunch in 10 minutes?
W: 10 minutes? It's 12 you TWAT

...simply SLAYED me, guy.

The Jesus sketch was EXACTLY Lee and Herring, so much so that it made me wonder why BBC2 would ditch L&H all those years ago if only to hire a Tom Waits to Rich and Stew's Captain Beefheart.

The Jesus sketch *was* very L&H, but there's so much else of brilliance going on in the rest of the episode that I think we can forgive them.
