Hippies Commentaries!
So, Hippies, one of my favourite underrated sitcoms, is actually getting a release! This is excellent news, obviously. Unfortunately, most of this didn't happen - but seeing as I was just expecting a vanilla set, I was pleased to read the following:
“Extras include audio commentaries by writer Arthur Mathews, ‘Hippy Invasion’ (1970 archive footage from the notorious edition of the David Frost Show) and a photo gallery.”
Arthur Matthews commentaries? EXCELLENT. (Let’s hope he does all six.) Lovely cover, too. (Oddly enough, it reminds me of this kind of atrocity - but actually done well.) Sure, I could wind myself up wishing that it had been a huge two-disc release - but I’ll take what I can get, especially for a show that is relatively unknown (although there is the Pegg factor to take into account with sales). To be honest, I didn’t think we’d get commentaries in a million years.
It’s just a shame the pilot isn’t included. I wish the BBC would schedule a season of unbroadcast pilots on BBC FOUR, or something…

Oh, I'd noticed it was getting a DVD release for ages. I just never got round to writing about it.
Then I found out about the commentaries, and just had to mention it...

I think it's fantastic - but it *is* an acquired taste, I think. Well worth you giving it a go, though.
Although i'd skip episode 1 to start with, as it's by far the worst. I'd watch episode 4 (first in production order), followed by 2, 3, 5, 6 (the best episode by far of the run) - and only go back to the first episode at the end.

Speaking of great DVD news...
All four series! Plus extras! I never thought I'd see the day. Fabulous.
Now all we need a proper release of Smith & Jones. (And a proper NTNON release - the original episodes, not the edited compilations.) A shame that their recent Sketchbook shows didn't make more people realise exactly how great they are, as with what happened with The Two Ronnies...
